Laser Skin Tightening / Rejuvenation

Introduction

At SkinSmart we have a variety of lasers that we use for non invasively tightening and rejuvenating the skin with little to no downtime. The choice of treatment modality depends on the patients individual skin issues such as the degree of laxity, wrinkling, pigmentation and vascularity present.

Description

The long pulsed Nd:YAG Laser is used for skin tightening by beaming energy into the deeper layers of the skin and subcutaneous tissues. This stimulates the formation of new collagen in the deep dermis resulting in a tighter, more youthful appearance.

The Q – Switched Nd:YAG laser is used to refine the skin quality and surface by targeting small imperfections and inhomogeneities throughout the skin . This effectively produces a distinct three dimensional pattern of islands of thermally affected skin tissue which results in the formation of new collagen and improvements in erythema, pore size, skin texture and tone that improve the overall skin quality.

The long pulsed Alexandrite laser can be used to treat pigmentation and freckling of the skin producing a more even skin tone and smoother skin. It also produces some deep heating of the skin to stimulate new collagen production giving back the skin its natural radiance.

Benefits and Application

Laser skin tightening can be used to tighten the skin along the jawline and upper neck to produce a crisper, more defined neck and jawline. There is an instant response at the time of the treatment produced by immediate collagen contraction. The result will then gradually improve over the next 3 to 6 months as the body is stimulated to produces new, fresh collagen fibres in the skin.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation can address many facets of the ageing skin including dullness, laxity, pore size, fine lines, pigmentation and redness. This is done safely with minimal to no down time using a series of non ablative laser treatments. Results improve gradually over the course of treatment.

An initial consultation is necessary to determine the type of treatment most suited to the individual patient’s requirements and then a course of between 3 and 5 treatments at monthly intervals is undertaken.

Preparation

As with most laser procedures careful avoidance of the sun for several weeks prior to the procedure is necessary as any tanning of the skin will reduce the effectiveness of the treatment and increase the risks of pigmentation issues.

No makeup must be worn on the day of the procedure as this will prevent the laser energy penetrating as deeply into the skin and thereby reduce the effectiveness of the procedure.

If the patient has a history of cold sores, antiviral medication will be prescribed to be taken on the morning of the procedure.

The Procedure

The choice of the appropriate laser or combination of lasers is made in consultation with the doctor during the initial assessment visit.

Eye protection is worn during the procedure and a cold air blower is used on the skin to improve patient safety and comfort.

Aftercare

The use of Stratamed, a silicon gel, forms an occlusive layer and acts like a breathable, moisture retaining dressing after treatment.  This will be sold to you at the time of the treatment if it is suitable aftercare for your treatment.  Other aftercare options include Anti-Oxident serum, moisturiser and of course sunscreen.  All of these are available to be purchased from the clinic.

Downtime

As this is a non ablative laser procedure the downtime is minimal. Some mild redness of the skin may be present immediately after the procedure but this should settle quickly over a few hours. Tiny imperfections in the skin will gradually come to the surface over the few days following the procedure and these will imperceptibly come away leaving the skin clearer and smoother feeling.

Risks

These laser rejuvenation treatments are non ablative, meaning that they don’t burn the skin surface but rather cause the selective heating of various elements in the skin to achieve the desired result. They are therefore safer than the more aggressive ablative treatments.

As with any type of laser treatment there may be some alteration in skin pigmentation, particularly in darker skin types. These changes are usually temporary and resolve spontaneously without treatment.

Occasional blistering and scabbing of the skin can occur at the treatment sites particularly with the treatment of pigmentation. This is uncommon with these types of laser treatments and usually subsides quickly over a few days if it occurs.

Discomfort

There is minimal discomfort with these Laser treatments, however, different patients report varying levels of discomfort from none to moderate.

Costs

Laser tightening and rejuvenation procedures start from $290 for smaller areas or $390 for larger areas or multi pass treatments.
